After losing his longtime columnist, the publisher of the legendary local Carmel Pine Cone newspaper asked if Lisa Crawford Watson would take over the weekly dog column. Leading with some kind of delusion that she had more important things to write about, Lisa declined the invitation. Still, he asked if she would cover one month, four columns. She accepted, and her husband, photographer Philip M. Geiger, agreed to take four photos—He even got four Chihuahuas to face front all at once. The spring of 2026 marked 15 years that they have been creating this column, having profiled more than 800 local and visiting dogs. And so it continues. Carmel is, after all the canine capital of the country.
